Safety requirements for services
Consumer products and services provided to consumers are covered by Safety Technology Authority Tukes. The Act also covers activities provided by municipalities and the church: e.g. summer camps and clubs for children.
- The Act does not cover the activities conducted by e.g. voluntary sports clubs and boy/girl scouting that are for members only.
Service providers´ responsibilities
A company or organisation that provides consumer services:
- Shall provide the service safely considering the weather conditions, customers’ age and abilities etc.
- The activity shall not endanger people in its proximity.
- If the service cannot be provided safely, the provider shall abort the activity.
- The service provider has to supply appropriate information on the safety of the service.
- Co-operate with authorities, if required to do so.
- Inform the authorities by its own initiative if an incident occurs, e.g. a fatality or a near miss.
Self regulation
Service providers are responsible for the safety of services provided. Tukes can help the business federations to prepare guidance on good practice.
In assessing whether a service conforms to safety requirements the authorities may give regard to
- guidelines and recommendations issued by authorities
- codes of good practice in the sector concerned
- the state of the art and technology. (Product Safety Act 7 §)
