CE marking

The CE marking is the manufacturer's assurance to authorities, importers and sellers that a product meets the requirements in EU regulations. CE is an abbreviation of "Conformité Européene", which is French for European conformity.

The CE marking must be affixed to a product if it falls under the scope of "New Approach" Directives. These cover such things as toys, machinery, electrical equipment, personal protective equipment, construction products, gas appliances, radio and telecommunication terminal equipment and medical devices. Additional information on CE marking is available on the Internet, for example at www.cemarking.net.

The CE marking or anything resembling it may not be affixed to products which are not covered by "New Approach" Directives. Information on the correct appearance and proportions of the marking is provided here. The Consumer Agency monitors the use of the CE marking.

The CE marking is not a comprehensive guarantee of safety. Directives may not cover every property of a product but only certain aspects such as mechanical durability and flammability. The advertising slogan "CE marked" or "CE approved" does not make a product safer than other similar products. The CE marking does not signify approval by a public authority.
