Mining

pictureTukes supervises the approximately forty mines and quarries active in Finland pursuant to mining legislation. In addition to general safety, mine safety also involves supervision of hoisting installations at mines and supervision of above-ground dams. Tukes furthermore ensures that the ore is extracted as efficiently as possible. All active mines are inspected annually.

Such inspections focus on

  - Mining safety
  - Manufacture, transportation and storage of explosives at the mine
  - Transportation and storage of flammable liquids at the mine
  - Mining vehicles
  - Safety of the environment of the mine
  - Supervision of utilisation of extractable minerals
  - Hoisting installations at the mine
  - Safety of dams relating to dressing activities

The Mining Act provides for the right to prospect for, claim and exploit on one’s own land and that of another deposits containing certain extractable minerals listed therein.

Ministry of Employment and the Economy maintains a register of
mining claims and mining concessions.
