Design and manufacture

The design of a construction product essentially depends on whether it is a general mass-produced item or one designed to meet the needs of a particular building.  Product design is subject to the requirements, including the content of harmful substances, as provided by various regulations and the Construction Products Directive. The design of a product to be made for a particular building is based on the plans for the structure of that particular building.

The product design of general products is only of limited importance as far as the safety of the product is concerned. The safety of the end product or structure to be built is formed only as the result of structural design and implementation and as a result of the compatibility of size and material.  The design of a product tailored to a particular building is part of construction design and thus a significant stage in ensuring the safety of the structure.

Most construction products are sold and supplied direct from the manufacturer to the consumer at the site of application.

The manufacturer is primarily responsible for the conformity of a construction product. The manufacturer ensures that the design, production, quality control and attestation of conformity have been properly managed.

A major part of Tukes’s supervision work is aimed at product manufacturers. We try to impact on manufacturer awareness and attitudes through information, consultation and cooperation , both direct and with organisations in the industry.
