Natural gas pipelines

[picture]Natural gas is used in energy generation at power plants and heating plants and in industry. Finland has little small-scale use of natural gas (households and the like).

Safety issues relating to the transmission, distribution and use of natural gas are subject to Tukes supervision. We promote and supervise the realisation of safety aspects relating to natural gas by granting natural gas pipeline construction licences, monitoring the activities of installation companies and operations supervisors and administering qualification examinations for supervisors in charge of natural gas pipelines.

Natural gas pipelines are a system comprising transmission pipelines, distribution pipelines and installation pipework as well as service equipment. Natural gas filling stations where natural gas-operated vehicles are refuelled are also considered part of the natural gas pipeline system.

Transmission pipeline refers to the high-pressure pipes used to transfer natural gas for local distribution. The distribution pipeline consists of the pipes as well as compressor stations, pressure reducing stations and valves and scrubbing stations.

Distribution pipeline refers to the pipes by which natural gas is distributed for local consumption at a reduced pressure.

Installation pipework refers to the pipes by which natural gas is transmitted to service equipment.
