Death of excavator driver in Agnico Eagle Finland's mine in Kittilä, 15 December 2016

A fatal accident occurred in the underground mine when an excavator fell from level 325 down to level 350. At the time, the excavator was being used for road maintenance works when the driver drove the vehicle over an open hole created by blasting operations at the mine. There are no eye witnesses to the accident.

Exposure of workers to malodorous gases at Stora Enso's plant in Veitsiluoto, 7 November 2016

An explosion occurred at the production plant’s concentrated malodorous gases collection system on 7 November 2016, at 3:14 am. The workers were exposed to concentrated malodorous gases at 7:26 am. when they were changing the rupture discs damaged in the explosion. One of the workers was admitted to the hospital.


Concentrated malodorous gases contain hydrogen sulphide, other sulphuric compounds, methanol and turpentine. According to the safety data sheet by Stora Enso, concentrated malodorous gases are extremely flammable, fatal if inhaled, and toxic if swallowed or in contact with skin.
