Product safety surveillance to be transferred from Consumer Agency to Tukes

04/12/2009

On 1 January 2010, Tukes will be taking over the product safety surveillance tasks from the Consumer Agency. Despite the transfer, product safety will continue to be monitored as before.

It has been the Consumer Agency’s responsibility to monitor and ensure that consumer goods and services on the Finnish market comply with the requirements laid down in the Product Safety Act and that they do not present any risk to consumers' health or property. These tasks will be transferred to Tukes on 1 January 2010.

The product safety surveillance staff at the Consumer Agency become Tukes’ employees and start work at our office in Helsinki. The national contact point of the EU rapid alert system for dangerous consumer products (RAPEX) will also be moved from the Consumer Agency to Tukes.

After the transfer, product safety surveillance and the operations of the RAPEX national contact point will continue as before. The surveillance practices and allocation will remain unchanged, as will the responsibilities and obligations set for entrepreneurs. The regional and local administration will be provided guidance as before.

The transfer will strengthen the surveillance of consumer safety, the aim being that consumers and entrepreneurs will be served on all surveillance-related issues at a one-stop agency.

As of 1 January 2010, the product safety surveillance staff can be reached by phone via our switchboard at 010 6052 000. All e-mail addresses will have the format firstname.surname@tukes.fi.
