Smoke barrier systems

The Act on Rescue Service Equipment (10/2007) does not set any binding obligations to use a specific standard for the verification of the conformity of smoke barrier equipment. For further information about verification of conformity, see Conformity of rescue service equipment (in Finnish).

There are harmonised product standards (the EN 12101 series) in compliance with the Construction Products Directive for many types of smoke barrier systems, under which the equipment must be CE-marked. In the absence of other publications laying down detailed requirements, the use of the standards and the CE marking is recommended in cases where there is a harmonised product standard for the product group.

Under leadership of the Finnish Standards Association SFS, three national standards have been prepared for the implementation of three standards in the EN 12101 series:

  • SFS 7023  Savusuluilta eri käyttökohteissa vaadittavat ominaisuudet ja niille asetetut vaatimustasot
  • SFS 7024  Savunpoistoluukuille eri käyttökohteissa vaadittavat ominaisuudet ja niille asetetut vaatimustasot
  • SFS 7025  Savunpoistopuhaltimille eri käyttökohteissa vaadittavat ominaisuudet ja niille asetetut vaatimustasot

The above national standards define the requirements by category to be applied in Finland to smoke barriers installed in buildings.

The Finnish Association of Civil Engineers (RIL) has published a guide on the design, installation and maintenance of smoke exhaust systems (RIL 232-2008, in Finnish).

The installation, maintenance and inspection of smoke barrier systems are not regulated under Finnish legislation.
