Smoke exhaust systems

Smoke exhaust systems fall within the scope of the Finnish Rescue Service Equipment Act (10/2007) and the Construction Products Regulation. Their conformity with requirements shall be shown with a harmonised product standard and CE marking, if there is a published harmonised product standard applied to the product group. The most up-to-date lists of the harmonised EN standards on smoke exhaust systems can be found on the hEN Helpdesk website, by using advanced search and choosing CEN/TC 191 as the TC group.

Under the leadership of the Finnish Standards Association SFS, national implementation standards have been prepared for the implementation of the following smoke extraction standards in the EN 12101 series:

  • SFS 7023 Savusuluilta eri käyttökohteissa vaadittavat ominaisuudet ja niille asetetut vaatimustasot
  • SFS 7024 Savunpoistoluukuille eri käyttökohteissa vaadittavat ominaisuudet ja niille asetetut vaatimustasot
  • SFS 7025 Savunpoistopuhaltimille eri käyttökohteissa vaadittavat ominaisuudet ja niille asetetut vaatimustasot
  • SFS 7028 Savunhallintakanaville eri käyttökohteissa vaadittavat ominaisuudet ja niille asetetut vaatimustasot
  • SFS 7029 Savunhallintapelleille eri käyttökohteissa vaadittavat ominaisuudet ja niille asetetut vaatimustasot
  • SFS 7037 Savunhallintajärjestelmän tehonlähteille eri käyttökohteissa vaadittavat ominaisuudet ja niille asetetut vaatimustasot

The above national standards define the requirements by category to be applied in Finland to smoke extraction systems installed in buildings. The standards are for sale at the SFS.

Pursuant to the Finnish Rescue Act (379/2011), section 12, smoke exhaust systems shall be kept operational and appropriately serviced and inspected, responsible for these duties being the owner and the occupant of the building. Installation and service activities for smoke exhaust systems are not regulated in the same way as they are regarding fire alarm and fire extinguishing equipment.

The Finnish Association of Civil Engineers (RIL) has published a guide on the design, installation and maintenance of smoke exhaust systems (RIL 232-2012, in Finnish).
