The term ”electrical appliance” in this context refers to an electricity-operated device that is placed on the Finnish market as a device subject to the EU Low Voltage Directive or that otherwise constitutes a possible electrical hazard. The operational installation of an electrical appliance may require the engagement of a contractor licensed to carry out electrical installations.
At present, there are about 100,000 different types of electrical appliances on the Finnish market. These appliances are mostly of the kind connected to the electrical power network with a plug and a vast majority meet electrical safety requirements. Nevertheless, hundreds of products inadequate in terms of safety are discovered on the market every year. A few dozen product types posing a potential hazard to life are found on the market each year.
