Sales statistics

Sales volumes of plant protection products have been collected in Finland annually since 1953.

Herbicides are the most sold group of plant protection products used in agriculture. Sales of urea containing fungicides contribute almost hundred per cent to the total sales of forest pesticides.

 

Statistics on plant protection product sales in 2016:

 

Sales of plant protection products for agricultural and horticultural use in 2016:


  • total sales of plant protection products were 4335 tonnes
  • total sales of plant protection products calculated in terms of active substances were 1575 tonnes
  • relative to the previous year the total sales of active substances declined by 9 per cent
  • during the last 10 years the total sales of active substances have varied between 1475 and 1747 tonnes
  • herbicides accounted for 80 per cent of the active substance sales
  • herbicides were sold 1265 tonnes (103 tonnes less than in the previous year) calculated in terms of active substances
  • the most sold active substance was glyphosate with 847,7 tonnes (in the previous year 859,3 tonnes)


The sales of plant protection products used in forestry in 2016:


  • total sales of plant protection products were 8878 tonnes
  • total sales of plant protection products calculated in terms active substances were 3017 tonnes
  • relative to the previous year the total sales of active substances increased by 25 per cent
  • urea contributed almost 100 per cent to the total sales of active substances
  • urea products used in forestry to control Heterobasidion root rot were first time introduced on the market in 2003 and since then the sales of forest pesticides have increased drastically: in 2003 the sales for use in forestry accounted for less than 1 % of the total sales of plant protection products in Finland, while in 2016 their share was 67 % of the total.
