Excluding the smallest sites, natural gas pipeline construction and natural gas storage requires a construction licence issued by Tukes. The licence procedure aims to ensure the safe placement, conformity, appropriate construction and equipping of natural gas equipment as well as consideration for external activity.
Construction and installation may only be carried out by authorised and professional operators.
Operators performing construction and installation work are responsible for ensuring that the natural gas pipeline constructed is compliant with legislation.
Sites that require a construction licence are inspected by an independent third party (an authorised inspection body). These inspections ensure an independent verification of the correct placement, equipment and readiness for use of natural gas pipelines. While in use, the equipment is inspected every eight years.
