Cadmium is a carcinogenic substance, and hazardous to the aquatic environment. Jewellery and its metal components must not be used or placed on the market if their cadmium fineness is 0.01 by weight or more. This restriction applies to all articles of jewellery, irrespective of their materials.


Jewellery considered to fall under this restriction includes bracelets, necklaces, rings, jewellery worn in piercings, wristwatches, brooches, jewellery attached to clothing, hair ornaments and cuff-links, as well as metal pearls and other metal components used in jewellery making. Nor must solders on articles of precious metals must contain cadmium.
