Articles made of precious metals can be marked with a hallmark. It indicates that an assay office has analysed the precious metal fineness of the article and has checked its conformity with requirements. A hallmark may be a voluntary mark, or an alternative to a responsibility mark. If an article of precious metals carries no responsibility mark registered with Tukes, it may be released legally to the market by having it marked with a hallmark.
At present, there is only one assay office in Finland hallmarking articles of precious metals, Labtium Oy. The Finnish hallmark depicting a crown on a heart-shaped shield.
