A mark is a permanent marking intended for articles of precious metals that are either punched, cast, engraved or marked by laser on the article. Articles of precious metals released onto the market and intended for sale in Finland must carry a responsibility mark and a fineness mark, or alternatively a hallmark of an assay office plus a fineness mark. Lightweight articles do not necessarily require hallmarking.
The weight limits for articles made of gold, palladium and platinum is 1g; for silver articles, 10g. The manufacturer, importer and retailer of an article of precious metals are responsible for ensuring that a product on sale bears at least the mandatory marks.
